Greetings ~

I have been building scale models all of my life. Model cars, ships, planes, trucks, etc. Years ago, I began building with wood. All scatch built models. I like doing dioramas.

I built a cemetery a few years ago for a western town that I created. I've been wanting to build another one in a larger scale to display at Halloween. So, this is the construction of that cemetery.

I start by cutting out the base.

Next, I cut out all of the parts for the mausoleum.

The walls of the mausoleum is glued together.

~

Gravestones and monuments are cut from balsa wood and glued together. They are mangled to appear aged.

~

Door framing is cut and glued to the mausoleum.

~

The mausoleum doors are cut out.

~

All of the trim is cut and glued on.

~

While the trim dries, a wheelbarrow is made.

~

More supports are added to the wheelbarrow.

~

While everything else is drying, costruction starts on a above ground vault.

~

A lid is carved for the vault.

~

~

The vault is painted and aged.

~

The wheelbarrow is painted to look used. Also, notches are cut into it to show wear.

~

Now that I have a lot done, it's layed out to see how much room is left. I still have to make more gravestones.

The monuments are carved and painted to look old.

The stained glass window is installed in the back of the mausoleum.

Rafters and ridge pole is installed in the mausoleum.

The roof panels are added. Once finished, it should look like the mausoleum roof is made of stone panels.

I now use "Stone Touch" spray paint by Plasti-Kote to create the stone look to the mausoleum.

The mausoleum is completely sprayed with the stone finish.

More monuments are done.

The framing under the platform is glued and nailed.

~

The platform is then painted brown for the color of dirt.

~

The doors are installed on the mausoleum. Plus the name "Viall" is carved over the front. (The name Viall is on a real mausoleum in an Akron cemetery).

It may be hard to see in this picture. There will be an open grave so I measured and marked it.

~

A pile of dirt is carved from a piece of wood. This will sit next to the opened grave.

Shovels are "dirtied" for the dirt pile.

The opened grave is cut out.

A box is made to go into the opened grave. It will be painted brown to look like dirt around the opening.

So far, it's coming together. But there's a lot of work yet to be done.

A few more gravestones to make, then I can start laying the grass.

I had to make a coffin for over the open grave.

Coffin is stained and handles are put on.

I cut out the pieces for the window frame on the back of the mausoleum.

After painting the pieces, they are glued one.

~

Now it's time to get dirty. So I pulled out the DAP caulk. This tube is colored brown.

~

First, I applied the caulk in and around the open grave.

~

I put the coffin in place on the support boards so they leave a flat empresion in the caulk.

~

Beside the mausoleum will be a dirt area.

~

After the caulk is smeared all over the area, I press a doubled paper towel to it and remove it. This leaves a rough surface.

The caulk sat overnight to dry. The brown caulk takes a lot less time than the clear to dry.

~

Once the caulk dries, it looks like dirt or hardened mud. I pressed a single track through it for the wheelbarrow wheel later.

Next, the grass is rolled out and glued down. Again, this sits overnight to dry.

~

Once the glue is dry, I cut out for the walkway.

~

Then I spread caulk evenly over the entire walkway area. This is smoothed out. Then the gravel is applied. Actually, it's cat litter. The wet caulk on the walkway is covered completely with the gravel. Then, I use a rolling pin to roll out the gravel and mash it down into the caulking. Again, this sits overnight to dry.

Once the caulking is dry, I use a brush to sweep off the excess gravel. Then a few things are put in to check how it's going to look.

Now I begin gluing the fence posts around the layout.

The red picket fencing I got somewhere, I don't remember where. I've had it for years. And I have a lot of it.

The open grave is lined with caulk.

The dirt pile is covered with caulk.

The coffin support planks are glued over the open grave.

~

More fencing is put up.

~

The gate frame is made.

~

The gate frame is painted and glued in place.

More fencing.

~

The gate is made.

~

The last of the fencing is installed.

~

The coffin and dirt pile is glued in place.

~

The mausoleum is glued in place.

~

The gate is glued on.

~

The caretaker's area is finished.

~

Two large pots with flowers are put on each side of the mausoleum's doors.

The headstone are now placed and glued.

~

~

Potted flowers are placed at one of the graves.

~

Candle lanterns are glued to each of the gate posts.

Well, that's over ~

Well, it's finally done. It took about two weeks in my spare time. Now I have absolutly no idea what I'll do with it. Probably put it out for an extra Halloween display. The rest of the year it will be covered up and stored in the attic. But it was a fun project.
